It is exactly what it is - a work of fiction. It is intended as a form of entertainment, not as a reference book, nor a grand exposé of Catholic conspiracy, nor the genesis of a new form of Christian cult.
Surely the Vatican can find some social injustice (say, maybe, genocide?) to address with as much if not greater fervor as they currently expend on a simple whodunnit.
